Isan Soul Review Authentic Thai Flavours in Melbourne

Located at 98 Bourke St, Melbourne VIC 3000, Australia, Isan Soul is a standout destination for anyone craving authentic Thai street food in the heart of Melbourne. Positioned in one of the city’s most dynamic dining precincts, this restaurant captures the lively spirit of Thailand’s northeast region while blending seamlessly into Melbourne’s multicultural food scene.

From the outside, Isan Soul already hints at its vibrant personality. Step inside and you are welcomed by colourful decor, eclectic Thai inspired details, and an atmosphere that feels both energetic and inviting. It is the kind of place that immediately sets the tone for a relaxed yet flavour packed dining experience.

A Menu Inspired by the Heart of Thailand

Isan Soul takes its name from the Isan region of Thailand, an area known for bold spices, fresh herbs, and vibrant flavours. The menu reflects this culinary heritage with a diverse selection of dishes that balance sweet, sour, salty, and spicy elements beautifully.

Classic Thai favourites like Pad Thai and Pad See Ew are prepared with care, offering familiar comfort for those new to Thai cuisine. For diners looking to explore further, dishes such as soft shell crab in curry powder and rich duck curry showcase deeper, more complex flavours. Each plate is thoughtfully composed, ensuring every ingredient plays a meaningful role in the overall taste experience.

Seafood lovers will appreciate the freshness in dishes like prawn cakes and tom yum soup. The tom yum delivers a fragrant blend of lemongrass, lime, and chilli, creating a bold yet refreshing broth. Coconut rice often accompanies curries and mains, adding a gentle sweetness that complements the spice.

Authentic Flavours with a Modern Melbourne Twist

What makes Isan Soul especially appealing is its balance between authenticity and accessibility. The kitchen stays true to traditional Thai techniques and flavour profiles, yet the dishes are approachable for a broad range of diners. Spice levels are well judged, allowing guests to enjoy the complexity of Thai cuisine without feeling overwhelmed.

For those who enjoy extra heat, additional chilli can be requested to intensify the experience. This flexibility makes Isan Soul suitable for both adventurous food enthusiasts and those simply seeking a satisfying meal in Melbourne CBD.

The presentation of the dishes is clean and vibrant, reflecting the freshness of the ingredients. Colourful herbs, crisp vegetables, and perfectly cooked proteins create plates that are as visually appealing as they are delicious.

Atmosphere That Feels Lively and Welcoming

The interior design at Isan Soul plays a significant role in its charm. The space is decorated with Thai cultural elements, retro touches, and playful accents that create a lively yet comfortable setting. It feels like a slice of Thailand brought into the urban landscape of Melbourne.

The restaurant often buzzes with conversation, laughter, and the clinking of plates, especially during peak lunch and dinner hours. Despite its popularity, the service remains efficient and friendly. Staff members are attentive and welcoming, helping guide diners through the menu when needed.

Whether you are stopping by for a quick weekday lunch or planning a relaxed dinner with friends, Isan Soul offers an environment that encourages you to slow down and enjoy the moment.

One of the best Thai places in Melbourne. Taste of food is excellent There's plenty of food to choose from. We also tried the coconut ice cream as dessert, which we all loved as it was simple yet flavourful. Very friendly staff and place feels like home. The place is well decorated and full of colour. Will definitely be back

Just really delicious, authentic Thai food at affordable prices. Soft shell crab in curry sauce was amazing. Would not recommend the crying tiger beef (slightly gamy and dry), but everything else was an absolute hit. Spice/chilli levels are a bit low (disappointingly, for me), but might work out better for some. Don’t expect too much in the way of service. They do get very busy especially on weekday lunches, so go early.

???????? isan food to spice it up : @isansoul_mel : Bourke St, CBD : With so many Thai restaurants in Melbourne, it might be hard to decide where to eat, but we’ve visited Isan Soul before and we loved it. Food is still as consistent as last time we came! : We always order the Fermented Pork Fried Rice because it’s not a very common dish in the Thai restaurants in Melbourne. I’d also really recommend the Soft Shell Crab Curry—eat the sauce with rice, divine!

I always get the soft shell crab and red duck curry and it never disappoints me. Highly recommend order these curry with coconut rice! The wait time is a bit long around 15-20 mins but the food was good so I forgive them for edging us the price is fair and splitting with people is not too expensive so generally 4.5⭐!

One of my favourite Thai restaurants, every dish is authentic and they are friendly with our dietary requirements while able to maintain the quality and tastiness of all their dishes. I recommend these dishes: - Pad See Ew - Crab fried rice - Crispy fish fillet with tamarind sauce - Pineapple fried rice - Pad Thai
